Fishing for Ice

ice fishing.png

Have you ever fished for ice?

I am not talking about catching fish with the fishing rod through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. It literally means going fishing for ice cubes. How can you fish for ice cubes? This ice fishing experiment can be done no matter the temperature outside. Let's try this science activity and learn about the impact of salt on ice.

 Materials

  • ice cubes

  • water

  • cup

  • string

  • salt

 Procedures

  1. Pour water into a cup.

  2. And add a few ice cubes.

  3. Lay your string over the top of the ice cubes.

  4. Pull the string out.

  5. Can you catch ice cubes?

  6. This time, sprinkle some salt on the ice.

  7. Wait about 30 seconds.

  8. Now pull the string out again.

Science Behind It

Pure water freezes at 0 degree Celsius. When salt is added to ice, it lowers the melting point of the ice. So it makes the ice melt. However, the water around the ice cube is very cold. It refreezes the ice cube so the ice sticks to the string. Then the string can pick up the ice!
