Cereal and Magnet

Pour water into a cup. Place some cereal and close a strong magnet. Move the magnet slowly. Amazingly, you can see the cereal is attracted to the magnet. Why? Let's do this fun experiment and learn what's inside the cereal.

 Materials

  • cereal

  • plastic bag

  • plastic cup

  • water

  • strong magnet

 Procedures

  1. Open the box and pour a cup of cereal in the plastic bag.

  2. Crush it up with your fingers.

  3. Fill the bag ½ full with water.

  4. Seal the bag securely.

  5. Shake up the mixture for about 1 minute.

  6. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. Cereal needs time to be dissolved.

  7. Close the magnet to the bag.

  8. Move the magnet gently. What can you see?

Science Behind It

If you look at the nutrition facts of this cereal, you can see that it contains different kinds of vitamins and minerals. Iron is one of them. Iron is an important mineral for body growth. Iron is very important in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. The body cannot make iron by itself. So we must eat iron-rich food such as meat, seafood, beans and spinach. Cereal also has iron. So, you don’t need to stop eating cereal.
